Often forgotten but never far away, mainland Greece is breathtakingly beautiful. Ancient Olympia, Delphi, the glory of Peloponessos is a wonder to behold with its beaches, its mountains and towns. There are the Diros Caves and the Byzantine city of Mystras to explore and discover. Overlooking the city of Sparta you will not help be impressed by the sheer magnificence of the area.

The first capital of Greece was Nafplio with its ancient archaeological sites of Myceneae, Epidavros, Argos and the incredible excavations of Nemea. Argolis is a favoured destination for visitors to Greece and Athenians alike.

We think of sunshine, beaches and ancient ruins when we think about mainland Greece, but we forget that there are beautiful mountains with wonderful towns like Kalavrita, with a narrow gauge train that travels through the gorge past waterfalls, rapids and the wondrous Cave of the Lakes, these mountains offer visitors great skiing and fantastic treks through beautiful landscapes that surround them.

The fortress of Monemvasa is just another marvellous place to visit along with Ancient Olympia, home of the Olympic Games in the 11th century. Visitors can see the ruins of the site where it all began, in one of the most picturesque settings by the Kladeos River. It is here that the Temple of Zeus was built by Livon. There was a huge statue of the God here at one time and it was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

On mainland Greece visitors will find one of the most important archaeological sites of the entire country and this is in Delphi, the ancient city of the oracle. The great temple of Apollo is found here and in ancient times for thousands of years, many would come to the oracle for guidance and seek knowledge of what was in store for them.

Some of the most fabulous natural rock formations are found at Meteora, in Greek this means ‘suspended in the air’. It was on these incredible peaks that medieval monks built their monasteries far above the rest of the world. This amazing area is now a designated World Heritage Site.

With so much to see and do on mainland Greece, the amazing sites, the wondrous landscapes, the restaurants, tavernas, hotels and the warm greeting of the people themselves, visitors will find there is more to mainland Greece than first meets the eye.

Exploring this amazing land is an adventure that must not be missed. Discovering Greece and all that it has to offer is a sheer joy. The food, the wine, the ouzo and the people who love to share their wonderful lives with everyone who comes to visit their land, is more than enough to make you want to come back and do it all again.

For centuries man has marvelled at the beauty of a land that time seemed to have forgotten. Today visitors to this land will be spoilt by the beauty of the past and pampered by the exquisite way that life has evolved in a country that is steeped in tradition.
